Step 6 - Growing Medium & Planting
Growing Medium
The type and quantity of growing medium or soil will depend on the type of plants it is required to support.
For a basic extensive roof garden we recommend a minimum depth of 40mm of sedum substrate; typically expended shale and pumice aggregate.
A more elaborate intensive roof garden will require soil of various depths, depending on the plants, with appropriate nutrient content.
DIADEM® does provide a variety of growing mediums which can be obtained through ICB but you may prefer to source these items locally.
Plants
From basic sedum genus type blankets to trees; anything that can be supported in a normal garden can be constructed on a roof garden, it is a matter for the client and will determine the correct design of the build up to support their choice.
