Barrial stands guard on school rooftop

Wednesday April 21st, 2010

Burnham Copse Primary School

Barrial, one of Europe's most successful ranges of safety rails and balustrades, is providing the ultimate in roof safety at Burnham Copse Primary School in Berkshire.

Built in the 1950s, the school had a guard rail fitted to allow safe access for maintenance works. With no parapet wall surrounding the roof of the two storey building, a strong self-supporting edge protection system was sought. Contractor, Kier Brazier Southampton, specified Barrial to answer the call.20 linear metres of Barrial's proven Shoe E system with fixed straight posts provided edge protection for the roof - a Bauder flat roof felt system - that surrounded the courtyard area of the school. A self-supporting base system, it is recognised as THE solution on roofs where it's not possible to provide a fixing to either a parapet wall or a roof slab. As the school had no parapet wall at all, a specially adapted version of Shoe E was used. The adapted system meant a three weight system held the base firmly in place ensuring that it could not be lifted or pushed over the edge of the building. Shoe E enables rapid installation of the Barrial balustrade system without piercing the roof finish.

"We found the Barrial system very user friendly to work with and construct and I would use this system again," commented Paul Fleming, Senior Site Manager at Kier.

Manufactured as a modular system in lightweight recyclable aluminium and available in both free standing and fixed options, there is a Barrial product that will meet every type of design situation. To fit in with its surroundings, Burnham Copse Primary School opted for its Barrial system in mill finish aluminium.

Suitable for any type of flat roof and where appropriate, on pitched roofs, the Barrial range meets the toughest of international safety standards, is competitively priced and easy to install.

Available in angled, curved or folding options, the range is marked by its distinctive good looks. As well as a plain aluminium finish, it is also manufactured in the full range of RAL colours.

Ideal for commercial, private housing and public sector developments, it can be used to enhance both new build and refurbishment projects without compromising on the excellent safety benefits.

Barrial is the latest offering from ICB, which supplies the successful range of EvalonĀ® single ply membranes and EvaGreen green roof systems to the UK market.
