Medina High School, Evalon®-Solar

Medina High School on the Isle of Wight chose Alwitra's exclusive Evalon®-Solar single-ply membrane as part of a major refurbishment of the school's roof areas. It is now leading the field in highly innovative roof design that not only gives long term waterproofing protection and improves aesthetics but generates enough power to save literally thousands of pounds.

The 1000m2 roof is now capable of producing 13.5kWp, enough to partially power the school including its banks of computers, plus more. During the school holidays excess power will be sold back to the school's energy supplier.

The £70,000 roofing project was specified by the Isle of Wight County Council and installed by licensed Alwitra roofing contractor Mountjoy (Southern) Ltd. The school's old asbestos sheet roof was professionally removed allowing the contractors to install a new deck, up-graded insulation and the high-tech power-generating membrane. The project took just two months to complete.

Evalon®-Solar is exclusively available from ICB (International Construction Bureau) Limited. It includes all the proven advantages of the company's exceptional range of high performance single-ply membranes but also generates electrical power which can be used either directly by the building or can be "sold" to an existing energy supplier.

The PV-cells used in Alwitra's Evalon®-Solar system consist of layers of amorphous silicone vapour deposited on a stainless steel substrate and pick-up grid which, combined into modules, are then integrated in manufacture with Evalon® single-ply roofing membrane. The result is a combined high-performance roofing membrane and source of electricity generation, installed in a single process.

All wiring and inverters to distribute the energy are installed as part of the package. Evalon®-Solar's flexible composition means it is perfect for flat or pitched roofs and tests worldwide in all weather conditions are proving extremely successful.

Evalon®-Solar is one in a wide portfolio of highly engineered products making up Alwitra's Ultimate Roofing System. It includes fine quality flashings, edge trims, roof lights, rainwater outlets, standing seam details and every component for extensive or intensive green roofs.

All installations are carried out by licensed, fully trained contractors and carry an extensive insurance backed latent defects guarantee.
