The dramatic trend to move away from traditional bituminous or pitched roofing products within the residential sector is seen as good news for world class single ply manufacturer Alwitra. Increasingly, house builders and architects are choosing distinctive contemporary roofs - often incorporating curved, barrelled or sweeping designs.
Such was the case with the stunning new development for Persimmon Homes in Newhaven where the project's architects were determined to ensure the roof areas of the new luxury apartments were an exemplary focal point of the building's design.
Mariner's Wharf, with its great historical connections and waterfront views, comprises 33 dwellings on the entrance to the harbour of Newhaven Fort. Local regulations required a sympathetic approach to design, and architects, Brighton based
M L Design Group, wanted to ensure their innovative concept would still meet with planning approval. Alwitra's Ultimate Single Ply System with standing seam detail was specified for the contemporary barrelled roof, which was completed during November 2004.
The high performance specification was installed by licensed Alwitra Contractor Garhigh, based in Croydon, and involved the membrane complete with its standing seam detail, being installed over an isolating torch-on felt layer, Kingspan TR31 ply-backed insulation and vapour control board, counter battens and the structure's steel frame.
Some 2300m2 of membrane were installed, with a contract value worth over £123,000. The project took just eight months to complete and is further testimony to Alwitra's performance as the market leader in the single ply sector - retaining a tried and trusted track record of excellence in the roofing industry for some thirty years.
