Green roofs change the look of seafronts forever

Tuesday November 3rd, 2009

Huts in Blyth, Northumberland

Blyth Valley Borough Council has turned beach huts into beach gardens in a way never seen before; with 20 dwellings featuring a design so unique it could transform Britain's seafronts.

Blyth Valley Borough Council has turned beach huts into beach gardens in a way never seen before; with 20 dwellings featuring a design so unique it could transform Britain's seafronts.

ICB working alongside architects Ian Brown Partnership, designed a bespoke EvaGreen® green roof, complete with an Alwitra® Single-ply waterproofing membrane for the 20 pitched roofs to produce a stunning beach scene, which has grabbed the attention of locals and visitors alike - and even the BBC.

These green roofs, which have also attracted interest from other seaside resorts, sit securely upon the 2.5m x 3.5m timber decked huts protected from the wind by Jute Netting and provide over 250m2 of green space.

The high-performance, durable and natural root resistant nature of the Evalon Single-ply waterproofing membrane, (manufactured by Alwitra® the same company that introduced the award winning Evalon Solar building integrated photovoltaic membrane), is ideal for standing up to the harsh seaside conditions, whilst the foliage in the green roofing has been carefully selected to thrive in the sea air.

The construction is completed with a special EVA gravel stop profile at each end of the huts to secure the entire system. It is just one of the many possible green roof solutions available when using the EvaGreen® Green Roof system.

For Blyth, the new beach huts have already attracted a waiting list of eager locals and tourists hoping to occupy them, but their one of a kind design - helped by ICB's green roofing solution -will act as a benchmark to inspire a total transformation of seaside resorts across the UK.
